Let's go back to basics

Hey everyone, Happy Mother’s Day! To present, expectant and future (I receive it Amen lool) mothers.

So today I want to go back to basics. With some of the conversations I’ve witnessed and the opinions people have discussed there seems to be a recurring theme; love

Most of us are aware of the biblical verse on love, it’s popularly quoted:

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

1 Corinthians 14:4-7 NIV

It’s easy to say but not always so easy in practice. When you think about it love is deep and mind blowing. Dare I say it but it’s difficult to comprehend the enormity of love without knowing who God Himself is.  Love isn’t based on feelings alone because sometimes I just don’t ‘feel’ like loving people. That doesn’t mean that I shouldn’t love. Real love has no conditions but the world seems to think otherwise.

I love you as long as I feel it

I love you as long as I get my own way

I love you as long as the going is rosy.

And the list goes on.

Now, I know it’s easy for me to type this from the comfort of my own home with my 20 year old self who has never been in love. I also know however what true love is and that’s through the love that God has shown to me. Because really and truly love isn’t about us. It’s not about me. It’s not about how much I can get from somebody else.

Love is about others. It’s about seeing others the way God sees them; precious. It’s about going that extra mile. It’s about doing things not to get a ‘thank you’ or even acknowledgement. It’s so easy to love somebody who loves you right? It’s so easy to love someone that doesn’t get on your nerves. That is basic. We need to get past basics. We need to love the ‘unloveable’. We need to love those that society has forgotten and rejected. We need to love people on a Monday morning on the way to work/school and during the rush hour when people don’t move out for you to get off the tube (that was for me).

Nobody ever said it would be easy and that is where the challenge lies. But if we ask God to help us He definitely will.  If there is one thing I’ve learnt it’s that

Love isn’t difficult but we humans complicate it.

Isn’t that the truth. So, here is to us loving everyone and loving intentionally and with purpose!😉
